Born and raised in Enid, Oklahoma, with three older brothers, my parents were beyond excited to have a girl, and I just wanted to play ball with the boys. I started dancing at age 4, and played softball and basketball in grade school. At age 12 I was invited to the competitive dance company, winning National Championships and top honors all through junior high and high school. I even got to travel to Europe to perform in an 11 day festival across Austria, and France!
I then attended the University of Central Oklahoma(UCO) after being accepted into the dance education department. I loved to dance! I wanted to make a career of it! Unfortunately my body didn’t. I had suffered several injuries from head-to-toe throughout my teens, that just never seemed to heal completely. And the increased studio hours in college only exasperated all of my injuries. At age 21 I felt like I was 80, I was in constant pain, in nearly every joint of my body. I finally decided to quit dancing, and attend Heritage College to study massage therapy in 2005.
I was desperate to solve my physical ailments, so the massage program was an attempt to kill two birds with one stone. I quickly fell in love with both the art and science of massage therapy. I had always loved activity and using my body, and was incredibly fascinated with the human body and what makes it tick. Plus it was like a dance with my hands in the application of massage. Meanwhile I was finding some pain relief and gradual decrease in the frequency of my flair-ups.So I focused my efforts towards the sports and fitness side of the industry, knowing this was the next step to building a healthy body.
In 2006 I began working at Body Rock Fitness Club in Nichols Hills to build my massage business, and returned to UCO to finish my degree in Exercise/Fitness Management. It was at Body Rock that I was introduced to Muscle Activation Techniques™ by Daren Kosters. MAT™ was the biggest turning point in my own physical recovery. Studying exercise, most of my classes involved physical activity, typically of the sport variety. So as I would get beat up in class, Daren would put me back together with MAT™. Massage seemed to help with pain, but it only lasted about 24 hours, whereas with MAT™ I could actually feel a sustained improvement from session to session. So as it would seem natural, after I completed my Bachelor’s in 2009, I then went on to study MAT™.
That entailed commuting to Denver 8 times over 10 months, and a grueling 2 day written and hands-on certification process, completed in 2011. I also began training (me being the client) with a friend and fellow MAT™ Specialist. She had studied the Resistance Training Specialist™ program, and utilized the RTS™ principles of Custom Fit Exercise and Micro Progression to rehab me to the strongest I’ve felt in years, maybe ever. I haven’t had a “flair-up” since, the chronic pain has subsided completely, and I have more strength to get thru my day on a consistent basis. You can probably guess where my education has led to next! That’s right, the Resistance Training Specialist™ program has become the next target of my focus! I am proud to have had the opportunity to move my business operations into the home of the RTS™ program at Focus on Fitness™.
With this added education, I’ve added the service of Custom Fit Exercise® to help others regain the function and independence associated with optimized muscular function. With the tools I have acquired through these multiple educational programs, I hope to share my passion for health and fitness to help others achieve their physical goals in the most effective, efficient and safest way possible!
On a more personal note, in 2009 I met my husband Luke (pictured above) during a mini internship where I worked under the Strength & Conditioning coach, Tom Ward, at his school, Edmond Memorial High School. Luke teaches PE, and coaches Varsity Football and throwing for the Girls Varsity Track. I’ve had the pleasure of working directly with both his teams’ athletes. I have even traveled with the track team to the 6A State Track Meet the last 4 years, where we’ve brought home the State Championship 3 out of the 4 years! I especially enjoy helping young athletes achieve their goals through consistent and focused effort! And it’s a major perk to get to work alongside my husband some of the time!
